The Dakota Rail Regional Trail is a 44 mile former railroad corridor in the counties of Hennepin, Carver, and McLeod. A portion of the trail in Hennepin County at the City of Wayzata to the City of St. Bonifacius was constructed in 2009. In 2010 additional trail and bridge work is planned in Hennepin County extending the trail form the City of St. Bonifacius to the Carver County line.

In Carver County, the Dakota Rail Regional Trail is 12 miles in length extending from the east Carver/Hennepin county line near Lake Waconia to the Carver/McLeod county line near the City of New Germany.

Phase 1 construction of the Dakota Rail Regional Trail in Carver County is scheduled to begin after March 3rd, 2010. The project consists of constructing nearly 7 miles of paved trail beginning at the east county line and terminating at the City of Mayer. The project is expected to be completed by December 31, 2010.

The entire corridor is currently closed to public use due to unsafe conditions. Additionally, heavy equipment needed for bridge and trail construction is planned to be mobilized to the trail corridor after March 3rd, 2010 and posses additional safety concerns for unauthorized use of the corridor.

Planned uses for the trail include walking/hiking, biking, jogging, and inline skating.

Dakota Rail Trail to be extended to Mayer | Mayer Herald Journal

The Mayer Hereld Journal is reporting that Carver County will be extending the Dakota Rail Trail from St. Bonifacius to Mayer this year.  Here is an excerpt from the article, as well as a link to the full story:

Federal funding has been approved and work is expected to begin on the Dakota Rail Trail in Carver County in 2010, according to Carver County Parks Director Martin Walsh.

The first six-mile section from Mayer to the east county line, is in the preliminary design phase, with construction planned for 2010. Construction of the second six-mile section, which runs from Mayer, through New Germany, to the west county line, is expected to begin in 2012.

Walsh said the trail surface will be asphalt, which will not only attract the greatest number of trail users, but is consistent with the requirements of the federal transportation enhancement funding grants, which amount to about $1 million for each six-mile section.

Bridges to be built over Highway 7 and County Road 92

Three Rivers Park Districk Associate Superintendent Boe Carlson has confirmed that bridges will be built over Highway 7 and County Road 92 near St. Bonifacius to address safety concerns.  The funding will come from $3.5 million in Federal stimulus money that was awarded by the Metrolpolitan Council.

Carlson stated in an email, “Federal Stimulus money that was provided for transportation projects was directed to existing state funding programs. That includes dollars for both motorized and non-motorized transportation. The bridges were included in the non-motorized allocation. All submitted projects were scored and ranked by the Transportation Advisory Board last fall, the group that recommends projects for the Metro Area. The bridges came out very well in that ranking.”

Carlson continued in his email, “Construction will begin this spring. We have already awarded a construction contract and anticipate work to begin as soon as the weather permits. We anticipate they will be completed by fall of 2010.”

The bridges will be designed for both bikes and rollerblades. The Hwy. 7 bridge will have a maximum grade of 5% and the CR 92 bridge will have no grade change.

Many thanks to Big Forum Dork who gave www.DakotaRailTrail.com our first link.  Here is what he had to say:

May I suggest the Dakota Rail Trail? You pick it up in Wayzata in the corner of the Marina parking lot. Just follow the bike path with the yellow dotted line. It is about 42 miles round trip from my place in Hopkins so if you are coming from Mpls, it will be about 50 to 55 miles for you.
